Can I clean the mirror of my telescope (EVSCOPE / EQUINOX)?

Follow

⚠️ Important: This article only applies to Unistellar telescopes from the EXPERT range (eVscope 1 & 2, eQuinox 1 & 2).
The ODYSSEY range does not allow mirror removal or manual cleaning. Attempting to do so may cause damage and void your warranty.

Is it necessary to clean the mirror?

In most cases, cleaning the mirror is not necessary.
Using an air compressor to gently blow away dust is already an effective form of cleaning.

Minor marks or dust will not affect the quality of your observations.

If you still want to clean the mirror…

Cleaning is possible, but must be done with great caution.
Any damage to the mirror, even on an EXPERT model, is not covered by the Unistellar Care warranty.
This also applies to ODYSSEY models.

1. Remove the mirror

Start by tilting the telescope to 90° to access the mirror mount.
You can then remove the mount from your telescope.
Unscrew the four screws around the focus wheel to detach the mirror unit.

⚠️ Important: Do not dismantle the entire optical block or touch any other screws than the four indicated around the focus wheel. During cleaning, only the surface of the mirror should be immersed as described in our tutorial. There is no need (and no safe way) to separate the mirror from its support: the block was designed to maintain precise and durable optical alignment.

2. Clean the mirror using only distilled water

Please follow the steps below carefully:

  • Prepare a basin with distilled (or demineralized) water and a few drops of dish soap.
  • Gently place the mirror into the basin, slightly tilted.
  • Pour distilled water over the surface several times.
  • Let the mirror soak for 15 minutes in the mixture.
  • After soaking, drain the water.
  • Cover the mirror with dish soap and add a bit of water.
  • Gently rub the entire surface of the mirror with your fingers.
Do not use cloth, paper towel, or any other fabric — the mirror coating is extremely fragile.
  • Rinse thoroughly with distilled water.
  • Let the mirror dry by placing it on its side, on bubble wrap, for about 20 minutes.

⚠️ Important Note

Be extremely careful throughout the process.
Any damage to the mirror, even on an EXPERT model, is not covered by the Unistellar Care warranty.
This also applies to ODYSSEY models.
