Wi-Fi Range of Your Unistellar Telescope

Follow

Your Unistellar telescope creates its own local Wi-Fi network to connect with your smartphone or tablet. This dedicated Wi-Fi lets you control the telescope even without any internet or cellular coverage.

What is the typical Wi-Fi range?

The Wi-Fi range depends on many factors:

  • In perfect open conditions (for example, in the countryside with no obstacles), you can reach up to 100 feet (about 30 meters).
  • In the office, with a clear line of sight, the range is typically around 65 feet (20 meters).
  • At crowded events (like CES), with many other networks present, the range can drop to 6 feet (about 2 meters).
  • Behind obstacles such as walls or bay windows, the range can be reduced to about 15 feet (5 meters), depending on the material (single or double glazing, reinforced walls, etc.).

Note: Observing through glass (for example, from inside behind a window) is not recommended. It will not only reduce the Wi-Fi signal quality but also compromise the telescope’s optical performance, as the glass may distort the image or introduce reflections.

How can I optimize the connection?

  • Stay as close as possible to your telescope, ideally within line of sight
  • Avoid placing the telescope behind thick walls or metallic structures
  • Limit other active Wi-Fi devices nearby to minimize interference
  • Make sure your phone or tablet has a reliable Wi-Fi receiver

What happens if you move out of range?

If you exceed the Wi-Fi coverage, the app may disconnect, interrupting the live view or telescope controls. Simply move back into range, reconnect to the telescope’s Wi-Fi network, and you should regain full control.
